Outlook vs. Outlook Express - Is there a difference?

Many people often confuse Outlook and Outlook Express. Although they look similar in name, they are, in fact, two separate programs. Outlook Express is the e-mail program that comes with Internet Explorer (IE). All browsers come with an e-mail program. Netscape has Netscape mail and IE has Outlook Express.

Both Outlook and Outlook Express provide access to send and receive e-mail. And, both can be set as your browser default e-mail program, but Outlook is not free.

Outlook is an e-mail program and contact management software. Outlook Express only offers the basic e-mail features found in most e-mail programs. Here are the side-by-side comparisons:

  Outlook
* E-mail
* E-mail filing
* E-mail tracking features
* Address book with details for contacts, notes and tracking feature
* Calendar - with links to contact records for tracking appointments and more
* Task List - to schedule important activities or to-do's
* J29-apr-04 11:05 AM and other filters
* Mail-merge to Word for letters or mass e-mail blasts
* Synchronization with Palm, iPaq or Blackberry
* Reminders for follow up
* Importing - Excel address list, Access database and more

  vs Outlook Express
* E-mail
* E-mail filing
* Basic rules for spam and e-mail filing
* Address book
* Importing from Outlook Express Address book or mail

Well, there you have it. Outlook is very different than Outlook Express. Think of Outlook Express like a diet soda: less features with the same Microsoft look.
